Basic Cricket Shots Skills
If you are a player who has yet to carve his place in a niche or beginner at cricket, we have put together tips to help you start your career.
A good sportsperson should have good reflexes, hand-eye coordination, speed, sound judgment, and strength. Playing a scoring cricket shot on the field can be difficult if you don’t know the appropriate shot at the moment. As beginners, you constantly ask yourself what you can do to improve at cricket? Undeniably the first few strides can be a daunting experience for any, and everyone has a shot at it. All the practice net sessions in your schoolyard or garden cannot prepare you for your day on the field. Practice, practice, and practice is the key to becoming a top-level cricketer.
Picture the scene wherein you are coaching 9-11-year-olds. You ask him to hit a cricket shot you just demonstrated. Excellent, he shadows it perfectly, hitting right to the point. Ahh!! If only they could follow instructions. Cricket is an acquired sports game. The more you play, the more you learn the skills to bat every ball thrown in your way.
It’s frustrating when a kid can’t get the shot right. It’s not just with cricket; it happens with every skill. It takes time and dedication to teach skills. Encourage him to translate the shadow or perform even better. It is not easy, but practice can get you there.
How To Hit Cricket Shots As A Beginner
Here is how you can warm up to the game and away from the frustrating feeling:
Groove Up To The Game
It may sound boring but grooving is the fastest way to build muscle memory. Find a balance and incorporate grooving in your everyday warm-up routine. Hit a few balls and then gradually transition into hitting 10 in a row. The time duration may vary from person. However, don’t let boredom catch up to you. Repetition is good but you don’t want to exhaust yourself mentally or physically.
There are plenty of drills with technical points you can practice to prevent boredom. Quickfire batting, flamingo drill, one-hand drill, and more.
When on the field you need to spot line and length and decide to play the ball. It is best to develop this skill right from the start.
Simulating bowling is ideal to polish your skill. A bowling machine is best suited for younger kids. This way you can learn to drive. Throw in a few odd balls that are not there in the drive to get a hand of the drive and length. Focus less on the shot and more on where the ball goes. Give the player room to explore rather than expect him to follow textbook methods.
Reward & Encourage
Form smaller groups wherein every player gets to have a shot. Let the player adjust himself on the crease and hit every ball coming his way. Slowly when he has adapted with hits try positive enforcements. Encourage boundaries only if you hit past the bowler or double runs for all straight hits. Track the scores of players over a few sessions to get an idea of improvement. Please encourage them to watch and copy their favorite sportsmen for extra tips.
More Fun Less Play
Beginners need to develop a love for the game. They need the motivation to keep learning and improving. All play may inflict upon a negative environment for the players. Beginners are motivated by fun activities. Keep the sessions light and short. Encourage movement as much as possible. Let the players make mistakes and learn their own way. The technique has not given us the best of our sportspeople. Every kid is gifted with a unique ability to tackle life. Let them explore their passion. Let them realize how straight shorts help in the long run. Once they have realized the importance then teach them when to play them so that they can pace themselves accordingly. Patience and fun elements are the keys to raising a legendary sportsman.
