Recently, BCCI extended Rahul Dravid’s contract as Team India’s head coach for the upcoming series and tournaments. The former Indian cricketer along with his support staff continue their tenure across all three formats.
Rahul Dravid was appointed as the Indian Team’s Head Coach in November 2021 on a two-year term basis. Dravid took over the position from Ravi Shastri mainly after the 2021 T20 World Cup campaign. Team India faced an early exit in that tournament’s Super 12 league stage.
The Indian team transformed exceptionally during Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach from 2021-2023:
- Winner of the Asia Cup 2023.
- Runners-up of the World Cup 2023 tournament
- Semi-finalist of ICC T20 World Cup 2022
- Runners-up of the World Test Championship 2023.
Moreover, Team India won all 10 matches in the CWC 2023 tournament before losing in the finals.
According to the agreement, Rahul Dravid’s tenure as Head coach concludes after the 2023 World Cup finals.
Earlier, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) approached another former cricketer to assign the responsibility of Team India’s head coach for T20Is. It was none other than the great former Indian pace bowler- Ashish Nehra. As a result, the former cricketer’s rejection left the BCCI officials in a dilemma.
Had Ashish Nehra accepted the offer, BCCI would have appointed VVS Laxman as the head coach for Tests and ODIs. A new concept of split coaching would have emerged for the first time in the history of Indian cricket.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and chief selector of BCCI Ajit Agarkar supported Rahul Dravid to continue as Team India’s head coach.
VVS Laxman is currently serving as the head coach with the young Indian side for the ongoing 5-match T20I series against Australia. The former Indian batsman, after the completion of this series, will return as the director of NCA ( National Cricket Academy) in Bengaluru.
It becomes evident that the Indian cricket team does not have a full-time coaching staff for the proceeding 5-match T20I series against Australia.
However, with no alternative option left, the BCCI extended Rahul Dravid’s contract.
One of the crucial reasons why BCCI extended Rahul Dravid’s contract is to maintain the team’s balanced structure and environment that he had placed in the past two years. Also, the appointment of a new Head coach would disrupt the team’s balance by taking time to shape into a new form.
Also, Team India under a new coach might enter once again the era of Greg Chappell (2005 to 2007) and Duncan Fletcher (2011 to 2015).
Notably, the BCCI did not disclose the exact tenure of Rahul Dravid’s new term. However, the confirmation is that the former Indian captain and his support staff will continue till the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
It becomes evident that the BCCI extended Rahul Dravid’s contract till the end of June 2023.
Interestingly, Rahul Dravid approached the BCCI officials last week, to extend his contract.
Rahul Dravid’s contract will be reviewed after the upcoming T20 World Cup tournament in the Caribbean and the U.S.
Ahead of the South African series, BCCI extended Rahul Dravid’s contract as the Head coach for red-ball and white-ball cricket. Team India along with Rahul Dravid and his staff will travel to South Africa for the forthcoming series. The 3-match T20I and ODI series along with the 2-Test match series kickstart from 10th December.
Along with Rahul Dravid, the tenure of these staff members has been extended:
- Vikram Rathour: Batting Coach
- Paras Mhambrey:Bowling Coach
- T Dilip: Fielding Coach
In fact, BCCI secretary Jay Shah promised that the board would provide a complete backup in his every attempt. Despite the team concluding as the runners-up of the CWC 2023 finals, Rahul Dravid gets valuable support.
After BCCI extended Rahul Dravid’s contract as the Head coach, the former cricketer shared an important message to the media.
“The previous two years with the Team have been quite memorable.” Rahul Dravid expressed his sentiments following his contract’s renewal by BCCI.
Furthermore, Rahul Dravid shares his emotional moments with his team:
“Together we faced many ups and downs. Throughout the journey, the support and the mutual trust within the group have been outstanding. I am extremely proud of the traditions we have in the dressing room. It’s a tradition that maintains strong relationships, no matter if it’s the moments of victory or hardship”.
Rahul Dravid mentions his thankful note to BCCI by additionally sharing some crucial facts:
“I am grateful to the BCCI for believing in my abilities and validating my vision by providing valuable support during this critical stage of my career. The demands of this position involve significant time away from home, and I greatly value my family’s support and sacrifice. Their useful role behind the curtains has been vitally important. As we accept new challenges after the World Cup, we remain dedicated to achieving excellence”. Overall, Team India under Rahul Dravid’s guidance is set to begin a fresh journey after the moments of the CWC 2023 finals
