BCCI rewards INR 125 Crore Cheque to T20 World Cup 2024 champions

After Team India won the T20 World Cup 2024 under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) secretary Jay Shah announced prize money of INR 125 crores to all players and staff members in the squad. Additionally, India as the T20 World Cup 2024 winner received prize money of $2.45 million (Rs. 20.42 crore) after triumphing against South Africa by 7 runs.

The reward is a motivation to the new world champions to conclude their 11-year waiting period of lifting an ICC trophy, with the Champions Trophy in 2013 being their last, which was led by MS Dhoni.

Several fans started making a comparison with the men in blue’s prize money in their previous ICC victories during MS Dhoni’s era as a captain.

BCCI’s Reward to Team India After Winning the ICC Title: Rohit Sharma vs MS Dhoni Captaincy

When Team India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, BCCI rewarded prize money of INR 12 Crores to the entire squad.

The Indian cricket team in the 2011 World Cup led by MS Dhoni, witnessed the BCCI announce prize money of INR 1 crore to every Indian player. Later it was changed to INR 2 Crores, with the support staff getting a huge amount of INR 50 Lakhs. Whereas, the selectors were offered rewards of INR 25 Lakhs.

In the 2013 Champions Trophy, once again MS Dhoni’s led side claimed another ICC Title and the BCCI declared the prize money of INR 1 Crore to each player, while the support staff received INR 30 Lakhs per member.

After 11 years, the BCCI has shown massive growth financially by announcing a whopping sum of INR 125 Crores prize money to the entire T20 World Cup winning squad. This means that each player would get more than INR 2 Crores.

How will the prize money of INR 125 Crores be distributed?

According to the latest sources, each player from the 15-member squad would easily get prize money of INR 5 Crores. This includes the players, who weren’t included in Team India’s playing XI, even for a single match of the tournament. It consists of bench players such as the opening left-handed batter Yashasvi Jaiswal. Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson and leg-spin bowler Yuzvendra Chahal.

Whereas, the reserve players such as Avesh Khan, Rinku Singh, Shubman Gill, and Khaleel Ahmed would be rewarded with INR 2.5 Crores each.

Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid gets a lucrative cash reward of INR 5 Crores, similar to the key players in the team. While the other coaching staff members get INR 1 Crore each.

The selectors will grab cash payments of INR 1 Crore each and the back staff members such as the physios and specialists in various departments get an amount of INR 2 Crores each.

Additionally, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde officially announced a huge cash prize money of INR 11 crores to Team India for winning this T20 World Cup. This announcement was made in the central hall of the Vidhan Bhavan (Maharashtra Legislative Assembly) in the previous week. Also, the four Mumbai players of the Indian cricket team namely the captain Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shivam Dube were felicitated as well. 

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah made an official announcement on his social media account that the prize money of INR 125 Crores was an encouragement to the Indian Cricket Team for winning the T20 World Cup 2024. Furthermore, he praised that the team has shown outstanding talent, dedication, and a true spirit required for any sportsperson in the entire tournament. Jay Shah concluded by congratulating all the players, coaches, and support staff for their sensational achievement.

Earlier, several players prioritized the Indian Premier League (IPL)  to earn huge prize money per season and prioritized franchise leagues over national commitments. Ultimately, BCCI’s crucial step conveys a simple message to the Indian Players that if you win an ICC Trophy, you can earn a huge sum of cash, which could be more than one’s expectations.
