Chandika Hathurusingha aims T20 World Cup 2024: Bangladesh Head Coach’s strategy

Bangladesh Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha aims T20 World Cup 2024 and confirms that the preparations have already begun in the form of the T20I series against New Zealand.

Recently, the Bangladesh cricket team scripted a maiden T20I as well as an ODI win in New Zealand.

By breaking the jinx in ODIs against the black caps after 18 successive defeats and 9 losses in T20Is as well, Bangladesh strives to continue its unbeaten streak in the shortest format of cricket.

The 55-year-old former Sri Lankan cricketer hopes for the team’s better gameplay in the 11 T20 matches, excluding the BPL 2024 ( Bangladesh Premier League) before the grand tournament. It includes the series against these teams:

  1. New Zealand: 3-match T20I series (Overseas)
  2. Sri Lanka: 3-match T20Is series (Home ground)
  3. Zimbabwe: 5-match T20I series  (Home ground)

Also, the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) prioritizes selecting the key players to contribute their optimal performance in the tournament.

After facing severe backlash in the 2023 ODI World Cup, the Tigers squad under Najmul Hossain Shanto’s captaincy aims to rewrite history.

Currently, Bangladesh maintains a good track record in T20Is by securing unbeaten streaks in 2023 series against:

  1. England: 3-0
  2. Ireland:2-1
  3. Afghanistan: 2-0

Chandika Hathurusingha aims T20 World Cup 2024: Shares an important update

Ahead of the 1st T20I match at McLean Park, Napier Chandika Hathurusingha voiced his opinion to the reporters that they hadn’t won any ODI or T20I series in New Zealand earlier:

“When you secure a satisfactory win, you feel motivated. Moreover, it is a joyful moment to repeat the same irrespective of the game’s format. The confidence gained will help our boys enter into the T20Is.

Furthermore, Chandika Hathurusingha aims T20 World Cup 2024 by hinting at his strategy:

“In 2023, Bangladesh has won three straight series outside the home ground. A victory in the 3-match T20I series against New Zealand will be the frosting on the cake for the visitors. This is a perfect preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Apart from the 11 T20Is ahead of the classic event, our players will be playing in the forthcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL 2024) as well.

We have multiple plans to play matches simultaneously and have an eye on T20 World Cup 2024. So, we are trying to execute our plans perfectly.”

Additionally, Hathurusingha spilled the beans about the key combination of the 2024 T20 World Cup:

“Though we have got 11 matches and BPL, we are trying with our best possible efforts. Ultimately, we might be able to acquire our playing combination. Assigning the roles to each player for the World Cup is the first step of our plan.

As I have said 11 matches from now till the T20 World Cup. It is a 6-month time period we have got to implement our plans and accomplish the desired results.”

Chandika Hathurusingha appreciated Soumya Sarkar: A Key Player for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024

Interstingly, Chandika Hathurusingha aims T20 World Cup 2024 by lauding Soumya Sarkar. His century includes a top-class knock of 169 runs from 151 balls ( including 22 fours and 2 sixes). Soumya Sarkar achieved his best ODI score in the 2nd match against New Zealand:

“Indeed, I am quite pleased with the way he performed. From the beginning, I knew that he was capable of delivering his best talent. Earlier, he showed his talent when I was here and the class is permanent.

Importantly, form influences many things that pass through your mind. If a player has a clear mindset, they can understand their job and optimize their potential by being comfortable in their surroundings.

Soumya Sarkar is in good form and there isn’t any valid reason that he cannot perform in the T20 World Cup 2024.

The 2nd ODI match was like a make-or-break moment for him. We trusted him and gave him complete confidence. The entire team trusted his abilities. That’s where I believe he gained his strength.”

From the above words from Chandika Hathurusingha, it is evident that Soumya Sarkar could become a key player for his team in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Chandika Hathurusingha aims T20 World Cup 2024: Overall Facts

Conclusively, the above statement of Bangladesh’s Head coach highlights his determination to work for his T20 World Cup plans in the New Zealand series.

After winning only 2 out of 9 games in the Cricket World Cup 2023, Bangladesh faced an early exit from the tournament. However, they luckily survived the elimination from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

However, the maiden wins in ODI and T20I at Napier scripted a historic win for Bangladesh at the venue. Whereas, it was a nightmare for the Black Caps fans despite winning the 3-match ODI series.

Notably, Bangladesh is left with a single T20I match in the New Zealand series.  Following the washout in the 2nd match due to heavy rains, the forthcoming match will decide the fate of the series winner.

Subsequently, succeeding in their 1st T20 game against the Kiwis would be exciting for fans to watch if Bangladesh continues to maintain its winning streak in the T20I series.
