Finally, CSK purchased Mustafizur Rahman during the IPL 2024 auction. The franchise acquired the former Bangladesh skipper at his base price of INR 2 crores.
Earlier, BCB was yet to approve the participation of players in IPL 2024. Even though without any official confirmation, fans attained some sort of hope and excitement when CSK acquired Mustafizur Rahman.
Also, the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) granted NOC ( No Objection Certificate) to Mustafizur from 22nd March to 11th May 2024.
He was one of the three Bangladeshi cricketers to participate in the IPL auction. However, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam were pulled out of the upcoming 17th edition of IPL.
After Kolkata Knight Riders released Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das, Mustafizur is the only Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL 2024.
Mustafizur Rahman makes his entry into the forthcoming season of IPL (Indian Premier League) in MS Dhoni’s squad. It was a transformation of collision to a collaboration moment between the former skippers.
After the auction, fans recalled an incident by sharing the old footage between Mustafizur Rahman and MS Dhoni.
Interestingly, during Mustafizur’s ODI debut in 2015, he deliberately blocked the path of MSD, while attempting to take a single. Dhoni shoved the Bangladeshi cricketer with his forearm realising Mustafizur’s intention.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals (DC) acquired the 28-year-old left-arm pacer for INR 2 crores in the 2022-23 season. He played only 2 matches in 2023 and took just a wicket. Whereas in 2022, he picked 8 wickets in 8 innings.
Currently, Mustafizur is in New Zealand playing the 3-match ODI series against the hosts.
Mustafizur Rahman was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) based on his overall performance in IPL and T20Is. Perhaps, the Delhi Capitals might have not utilized Mustafizur’s talent to great potential and sold him based on his dipped performance in the past two seasons.
Mustafizur grabbed 47 wickets in 48 IPL cricket matches. His best bowling figures include 3-16 in an IPL match. Notably, he took 103 wickets in just 84 T20I innings with his best bowling figures of 5-22 in a single game with an impressive economy rate of 7.58.
Along with Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur, Mustafizur Rahman powers up the CSK’s pace bowling unit in any Indian premier league match.
The five-time defending champions secured Mustafizur during the accelerated round.
Apart from the Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, another overseas speedster fuels the bowling lineup.
He made his first stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and was part of the winning squad in his IPL debut. Subsequently, he made his contribution to different franchises such as Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals.
Importantly, the prime reason why CSK purchased Mustafizur Rahman is based on his impressive performance in his debut season, achieving the title of “Emerging Player of the Tournament” in 2016. Also, he was the first overseas player to accomplish the feat in IPL.
Furthermore, the Bangladesh cricketer has an outstanding experience to play on slow and twisting pitches. Mainly, the pitch conditions at Dhaka, Bangladesh proved tricky for overseas players and favorable for the Tigers squad.
Another reason why CSK purchased Mustafizur Rahman is to deliver exceptional performance on batting-friendly or sluggish pitches. Especially, the surfaces at Chepauk offer many twists and turns in the game.
Trusting MS Dhoni’s strategies, CSK purchased Mustafizur Rahman hoping to extract the best skills from the pace bowler.
The legendary cricketer and CSK’s mastermind captain MS Dhoni’s ability to nurture talents has been proven many times.
A few instances where MS Dhoni groomed the rising talents in IPL were with the Indian opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana.
Indeed, MS Dhoni was the crucial reason behind Rohit Sharma’s transformation into an explosive batsman. In 2013, MSD promoted Hitman from middle-order to an opener in international matches and the rest was history…
Ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, CSK had a purse value of INR 31.4 crores. A total of 6 slots were available for CSK, out of which 3 overseas players could be included.
The accelerated round started at 6:39 pm IST with 2 remaining slots for CSK and purse value left with INR 3.20 crores.
With 1 overseas slot left out of 3, CSK purchased Mustafizur Rahman for INR 2 crores by adding a Bangladeshi flavor to its squad.
Moreover, the left-arm seamer was the 5th player to be sold in the accelerated round.
Especially, after Gujarat Titans roped the Australian pacer Spencer Johnson for INR 10 crore, CSK immediately decided to grab another seamer with an expensive price.
As a result, other franchises like MI and DC tried to implement CSK’s strategy and concluded by making a wrong move to bid inexperienced players for the costly price.
After the auction concluded, CSK retained an overall purse value of INR 1 crore. The franchise purchased these talented cricketers, categorized below with the highest price range:
- Daryll Mitchell ( NEW ZEALAND): INR 14 crores
