How should Bangladesh build their squad going into T20WC 2024?

The 3-match T20I series against the USA will be an added advantage for Bangladesh to strengthen their squad by including the best performers of the series ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Mainly Bangladesh which is a part of Group D needs to win against its opponents such as South Africa, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Nepal in the early phases to qualify for the super eight stages of the T20WC 2024.

The upcoming World Cup tournament will be hosted in the West Indies and the USA. As a result, it is a perfect opportunity for Bangladesh to get used to the playing conditions in the USA.

Especially, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has planned for a 5-match T20I series against Zimbabwe that starts on 28th April. Additionally, these matches will help the Bangladesh cricketers refine their skills.

In this article, you will find out the strategies the Bangladesh cricket team can implement to build a strong squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Bangladesh Strategies to build a strong squad for T20WC 2024

With two months left for the T20WC 2024 tournament to commence, Bangladesh has a perfect opportunity to implement these strategies and build a talented squad:

1. Preparation Matches:

Ahead of the T20WC 2024, Bangladesh can use the ongoing and upcoming matches of these three series as a preparation such as:

  • Sri Lanka Tour of Bangladesh March-April 2024: 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 2 Tests
  • Zimbabwe Tour of Bangladesh May 2024: 5T20Is
  • Bangladesh Tour of USA May 2024: 3 T20Is

Specifically, Bangladesh will play the first three T20I matches against Zimbabwe in Chattogram, whereas the last two games will be played in Mirpur. The entire 5-match T20I contest takes place between 3rd May and 12th May.

Whereas, Bangladesh will start the 3-match T20I series against the USA on 20th May and conclude on 24th May. It means that the series would be completed nine days before the commencement of the T20 World Cup tournament. Also, Bangladesh will have sufficient time to get used to the USA weather and pitch conditions compared to other teams.

2. Learning from the recent performances:

The ongoing multi-format series against Sri Lanka will be a learning moment for Bangladesh to review their performances. For instance, Bangladesh needs to improve their chasing abilities as they have lost 2 out of 3 matches against the visitors batting second. Only in the second T20I, they were able to chase the target by scoring 170 runs.

Most importantly, their bowling attack needs to improve as they have allowed the visitors to score 170+ runs in all the 3-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

A loss in the recent 3-match T20I series against Sri Lanka with 1-2 will be a warm-up for Bangladesh. It is because both these teams in the same Group D of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will lock horns against each other on 07th June (Friday).

3. Player Performance:

The national selectors should include such players in the squad whose performance was exceptional in the past year in the T20I format. In such cases, Bangladesh should consider these top three batters whose performance could be crucial in the forthcoming T20WC namely:

  • Towhid Hridoy: 153 runs in 8 innings
  • Litton Das: 142 runs in 7 innings
  • Najmul Hossain Shanto: 132 runs in 8 innings

Similarly, these three bowlers should be included in the T20 World Cup squad who were the top wicket takers for Bangladesh in the previous year such as:

  • Shoriful Islam: 10 wickets in 8 innings
  • Taskin Ahmed: 9 wickets in 6 innings
  • Mustafizur Rahman: 7 wickets in 8 innings.

4. Team Composition:

The middle order of the Bangladesh cricket team should be well composed and sharpen their power-hitting skills in the death overs with the presence of these batters such as:

  • Towhid Hridoy
  • Mahmudullah
  • Jaker Ali

Additionally, bowlers like Rishad Hossain and Taskin Ahmed can contribute essential runs as handy batsmen in the completing phase of innings.

Conclusion:

After a disastrous campaign in the Asia Cup and World Cup in 2023, the Bangladesh team should take certain serious measures to improve their performance under a new skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto. Also, the former Bangladeshi captain and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s participation seems to be impossible since he hasn’t recovered completely from his eye problem. As a result, Shakib had to miss out on the ongoing and upcoming series before the T20 World Cup.

However, the Bangladeshi players’ lack of experience playing on American pitch conditions will be worked out during the upcoming tour of the USA in May 2024.

Most importantly, the selectors should scrutinize and give priority to the well-performing players in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka Zimbabwe, and the USA.

Especially, Bangladesh after being knocked out in the group stages of the previous editions of the T20 World Cup will aim to exhibit an improvised show by rectifying their drawbacks from an unimpressive ODI World Cup. Ultimately, Bangladesh has a chance to turn the competition around at the T20 World Cup 2024 only by playing aggressive cricket and adapting to unfamiliar or unusual overseas pitch conditions.
