IPL 2024: ‘Do or Die’ – RCB vs CSK Will Be The Most Watched Match This Season

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) under Faf du Plessis’s captaincy have skyrocketed their position from being the table bottomers to sixth place in the IPL 2024 points table, and currently aim to secure a highly competitive playoff spot. Their upcoming match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on 18th May poses several challenges. Mainly, Delhi Capitals (DC) pulled off a thrilling victory against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 19 runs which added an extra spice to the playoffs race.

As the playoff spot remains at stake, the clash between RCB and CSK on the penultimate day of the IPL 2024 league stages becomes crucial for these two teams. The winner will finish in the top four on the IPL 2024 points table to qualify for playoffs. However, CSK needs a victory to grab an additional two points and secure a spot in the playoffs. Whereas, RCB must not only win by a considerable margin but also needs to rely on the other teams’ results to jump to the fourth position.

Even former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh shared his thoughts that the match between RCB and CSK will be a “Do or Die” contest for both teams. Although Delhi Capitals currently ranks at the 5th  position, a lower run-rate of -0.377 with 14 points makes it impossible for Rishabh Pant’s led side to advance through the playoffs.

It would be interesting to find out why May 18 is considered the auspicious day for RCB as well as for Virat Kohli by evaluating the previous season’s performances.

RCB and Virat Kohli’s Unbeaten Records on 18th May: A Glimpse of their spectacular performances

Here are the unbeaten records of RCB on 18th May in these four IPL seasons highlighted along with Virat Kohli’s exceptional performances in 3 out of 4 matches listed below:

2013: RCB won by 8 wickets against CSK

Batting first at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Virat Kohli’s unbeaten half-century of 56 runs from 29 balls (including 6 fours and 4 sixes) propelled RCB to a total of 106-2 in 8 overs. Shockingly, the CSK batters managed to score just 82-6 in 8 overs.

2014: RCB won by 5 wickets against CSK

Suresh Raina’s brilliant knock of 62 runs from 48 balls guided CSK to a total of 138-4 in 20 overs against RCB. However, these three batters played a supportive role that helped RCB score 142-5 in 19.5 overs namely:

  • Chris Gayle: 46 runs from 50 balls (including 3 fours and 3 sixes)
  • Ab de Villiers: 28 runs from 14 balls (including 1 four and 3 sixes)
  • Virat Kohli: 27 runs from 29 balls (including 1 four and 1 six)

2016: RCB won by 82 runs against KXIP by DLS method

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten knock of 113 runs from 50 balls (including 12 fours and 8 sixes) and Chris Gayle’s supportive performance of 73 runs from 32 balls( including 4 fours and 8 sixes) steered RCB to a huge total of 211-3 in 15 overs. The Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) batting order collapsed during the chase, thereby scoring just 120-9 in 14 overs.

2022: RCB won by 67 runs against SRH

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were able to post a total of 186-5 in 20 overs with the brilliant contribution of Heinrich Klaasen’s blistering century of 104 runs from 51 balls (including 8 fours and 6 sixes). However, Virat Kohli’s 63-ball century which included 12 fours and 4 sixes supported by Faf du Plessis’ brilliant knock of 71 runs from 47 balls (including 7 fours and 2 sixes) steered RCB to score 187-2 in 19.2 overs.

Harbhajan Singh about RCB vs CSK match in IPL 2024

The former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh highlights that Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are like fire and water, who was earlier part of the 2011 World Cup winning squad. He shared his opinion that the winner of this crucial contest will qualify for the playoffs and predicts that there will be a massive crowd outside as well as inside the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on that day.

Furthermore, he points out that although Kohli isn’t a trophy winner like Dhoni, his hunger to score runs will be a huge benefit for RCB to secure one of the biggest victories in IPL history.

Scenarios on how RCB can qualify for the playoffs: Another important mission on 18th May

Once again RCB has another important mission to accomplish on 18th May 2024 and a simple win wouldn’t suffice as they need to secure a massive victory against CSK. A victory with a significant margin enhances RCB’s Net Run Rate and climbs ahead of CSK into the playoff race.

Virat Kohli’s amazing history on this date and his current form as the orange cap holder offer hope for his team and fans who are dreaming of RCB’s playoff glory.

CONCLUSION:

Finally, the stage is ready for an intense clash with Faf du Plessis leading RCB against the defending champions CSK led by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Especially, RCB needs to maintain their unbeaten record on 18th May, which is a key factor to unleash their playoff chances.

Mainly, RCB needs to chase the target within 18.1 overs or secure a win by 18 runs or more to surpass CSK’s net-run rate.

On the other side, if Sunrisers (SRH) loses both its matches against Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS), both CSK and RCB will have higher chances to qualify for playoffs (if RCB wins against CSK). In such scenarios, RCB’s qualification is dependent on their last match regardless of their net-run rate.

Is it possible for RCB to seal a playoff spot on this special occasion? Can CSK end RCB’s winning streak on May 18 and eliminate them from the tournament? These are the questions asked by every cricket enthusiast. Ultimately, the 68th match of IPL 2024 will be the most-watched match of this season. But, if history is taken into consideration, then RCB fans have several reasons to believe that the team will once again triumph on this auspicious date.
