IPL 2024 Playoffs predictions: Which 4 teams could make it to the knockouts?

Based on the current scenario, either Chennai Super Kings (CSK) or Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) can become the fourth team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs along with the other three teams.

Interestingly, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) became the third team to officially qualify for the playoffs, as the 66th match of IPL 2024 was cancelled due to severe rains at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on 16th May 2024. Unfortunately, the back-to-back matches for Gujarat Titans (GT) have been called off due to rain, which straight away marked their elimination from the tournament.

Also, the other two teams such as the Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) had the only hopes of qualifying for the playoffs, only if SRH had lost their two matches against GT and PBKS.

After Rajasthan Royals(RR) lost to Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 5 wickets on 14th May at  Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) gained a huge benefit to finish at the leading position in the IPL 2024 points table.

Before the Qualifier 1 round, the last match in the league stage of the ongoing season between RR and KKR will take place on 19th May 2024 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, which will be a perfect rehearsal for both teams.

As usual, teams that conclude at the first two positions in the points table will lock horns against each other in the Qualifier 1 round. Whereas, the teams ranking at the third and fourth spots will participate in the Eliminator round.

Let’s find out how the best four teams can advance into the two different playoff stages of the tournament in detail…

Teams to Participate in Qualifier 1 Round: KKR and RR Qualified for Playoffs

Here is how KKR and RR could lock horns against each other in the Qualifier 1 round that will be played on 21st May 2024 (Tuesday) at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad:

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR): 19 Points with +1.428 NRR

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have not only officially qualified for the playoffs but also sealed the top position by securing 19 points from 13 matches with a massive net run rate of +1.428. Even if Shreyas Iyer’s led side loses their upcoming match against RR, they would still participate in the Qualifier 1 round as the table toppers.

Rajasthan Royals (RR): 16 Points with +0.273 NRR

Rajasthan Royals became the 2nd team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs after Delhi Capitals (DC) pulled off a tremendous win against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 19 runs. After playing 13 matches, RR achieved 16 points with +0.273 NRR.

Despite losing four games on a trot, fans expect RR to participate in the Qualifier 1 round as Sanju Samson’s led side would be keen to retain their second position. This could only be possible if RR wins its next match against KKR with a huge margin. At the same time, SRH has higher chances to reach the 2nd position if they pull off a massive victory against PBKS in its next match as well as if RR loses its upcoming match to KKR.

Teams that might participate in the eliminator round: A Fierce Competition for 3rd and 4th Position

Let us evaluate the chances of these three teams that might seal either the 3rd or 4th position in the points table to participate in the eliminator round that takes place at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 22nd May (Wednesday):

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): 15 Points with +0.406 NRR

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is one of the best and fortunate teams to qualify for the playoffs without any hassle.

Pat Cummins-led franchise has 15 points with a net run rate of +0.406. Especially, the cancelled match against Gujarat Titans (GT) helped SRH secure a single point to seal its deal for the playoffs and currently ranks in the 3rd position. If RR loses its next match against KKR, then SRH with a healthy net run rate will certainly reach the 2nd position in the points table to gain maximum benefit of playing in the Qualifier 1 round. This would only be possible if SRH wins its next match against PBKS on 19th May. Also, SRH reserves the right to rank at 3rd or 4th position based on the following conditions:

  • 3rd Position: If SRH loses to PBKS and RCB wins against CSK.
  • 4th Position: If CSK wins against RCB and SRH loses to PBKS

Chennai Super Kings (CSK): 14 Points with +0.528 NRR

Chennai Super Kings is another team that holds its future in its own hands. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s led yellow army needs a win against RCB in its final match of the group stage to gain an overall of 16 points to progress into the playoffs.

Especially, LSG’s 19-run defeat to DC on 14th May has made the job of CSK much easier. This is because even if CSK loses to RCB with a small margin, their Net Run Rate wouldn’t be affected. Even if the match gets cancelled due to rain, CSK will still advance through the playoffs.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB): 12 Points with +0.387 NRR

Royal Challengers Bengaluru requires a massive victory against CSK in its last match of the league stages which will be played at their home ground on May 18. Faf du Plessis-led side either needs to chase the required target within 18.1 overs or restrict CSK’s chase with a difference of 18 runs or more.

Notably, RCB has been winning all its five matches consecutively and managed to reach the 6th position in the points table, thereby keeping their playoff hopes in the hunt.

DC and LSG’s chances of qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs

Here is how Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Delhi Capitals (DC) chances to qualify for the playoffs completely broke down after the recent abandoned game between SRH and GT:

Delhi Capitals( DC): 14 Points with -0.377 NRR

Delhi Capitals became the first team to complete its quota of 14 matches in the league stages of this season. With a negative net run rate, the team hangs with 14 points at fifth position in the points table. Ultimately, the rains in Hyderabad enhanced the fortunes of SRH, which marked the elimination of DC from the playoffs race.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG):

A loss against the Capitals on 14th May (Tuesday) destroyed the hopes of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to make it into their 3rd consecutive IPL playoffs. A negative NRR doesn’t help KL Rahul’s led side to enter the knockouts and are yet to be eliminated officially. In other words, if LSG manages to secure a victory by more than 100 runs against Mumbai Indians (MI) in their upcoming match, their net-run rate will remain negative.

Ultimately, these three teams namely KKR, RR and SRH have earned the label “Q” beside their name, which indicates that they have officially qualified for the playoffs. Whereas, the fourth spot will be finalized based on the outcome of the most awaited 68th match of the IPL 2024 between RCB and CSK. Also, the net run rate will play a crucial role as a tie-breaker between these two teams (if RCB wins the match).

Moreover, RCB has a great history of winning the matches on May 18 in four IPL seasons so far (in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2022). On the other side, CSK would be planning to spoil RCB’s party by pulling off a tremendous victory to enter the knockout stages of IPL for the 13th time. Finally, it would be exciting to watch if RCB maintains their winning streak on this auspicious date and makes it even more special by advancing into the playoffs or not.
