Top 5 expensive players of IPL 2024 and their performances

During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction in Dubai on 19th December 2023, all 10 franchises spent a huge sum of money to secure the services of some high-profile players, who were performing incredibly well during or before the grand event.

Especially, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were the top investors spending an overall INR 31.35 crores and INR 30.80 crores each. As a result, both these franchises finalized the deal of two Australian cricketers at a costly price ever in the history of IPL. Even the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) grabbed the attention of fans by spending a massive sum of INR 30.40 crores from their purse.

It has been five weeks since the IPL 2024 season commenced and the rich-cash league has been running successfully by recording many twists and turns in the tournament. As the tournament has passed the halfway mark, it would be interesting to scrutinize the performances of the top five costliest players of the ongoing season to find out if they are worthy of their investment or not.

Performances of the 5 Costliest Players of IPL 2024: From Mitchell Starc to Alzarri Joseph

Starting from Mitchell Starc to Alzarri Joseph, these are the five most expensive players of IPL 2024 and their performances are discussed below in detail:

1. Mitchell Starc (Kolkata Knight Riders): INR 24.75 Crores

During the IPL 2024 auction, Mitchell Starc grabbed the headlines after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquired him for INR 24.75 crores, which is indeed the costliest offer grabbed by any player in the history of IPL auctions. The main responsibility of the Australian veteran bowler was to strengthen the pace bowling attack of KKR. Rather, his latest performance in the ongoing season reveals his inability to create wonders with the ball.

In 7 innings, Starc took only 6 wickets at an economy of 11.48, which is not at all ideal for a bowler’s standards in T20s. Moreover, he conceded 287 runs, which proves that he hasn’t performed well according to his price tag.

Despite his flop show, KKR fans and the team would still keep faith in him by hoping that he will make a comeback having the potential to knock out the batters with his experience and skills in the forthcoming matches.

2. Pat Cummins (Sunrisers Hyderabad): INR 20.50 Crores

The demand for Pat Cummins reached its peak after he led Australia to their 6th title win by defeating India on their home ground in the 2023 World Cup finals. However, he surpassed the expectations by grabbing a lucrative offer of INR 20.50 crores from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during the auction.

Later, the IPL 2016 defending champions declared Cummins as the new skipper of the team. Under his leadership, the Orange Army won 5 out of 9 games and currently holds the 4th position in the points table after facing a 78-run loss against the Chennai Super Kings on 28th April 2024. Moreover, the SRH’s batting unit strengthened under his captaincy by scoring 250+ scores three times in a single season and recorded the mammoth total of 287-3 in 20 overs, which is currently the highest total in IPL history.

In terms of his bowling performance, the 30-year-old grabbed 10 wickets in 9 matches at an average of 32.43 and a 9.11 economy rate. It includes his best bowling figures of 3-43 and conceded 328 runs so far in this tournament.

3. Daryl Mitchell (Chennai Super Kings): INR 14 Crores

New Zealand’s veteran batter Daryl Mitchell made his comeback into the rich cash league after two years and became the third most expensive player of IPL 2024 by grabbing the package of INR 14 crores from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Especially, the franchise was impressed with his brilliant scores for his team during the 2023 Cricket World Cup organised in India.

In 8 innings, Daryl scored only 198 runs at a normal strike rate of 132.00 and 28.29 average by scoring only a half-century. It includes his highest score of 52 runs from 32 balls (including 7 fours and 1 six) against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk stadium on 28th April 2024.

However, after scoring a half-century in his recent match, the 33-year-old New Zealand batter promises to make crucial contributions for his team by scoring big numbers in the remaining 5 matches before the playoffs.

4. Harshal Patel (Punjab Kings): INR 11.75 Crores

A hefty amount of INR 11.75 crores from the Punjab Kings (PBKS), ranks Harshal Patel as the fourth most expensive player of the IPL 2024. The PBKS fans’ expectations surged following the attractive deal offered to the Indian medium pacer for delivering an effective performance to his team in the tournament.

By analyzing Harshal’s bowling performance, it is fair to say that he has executed his responsibilities efficiently. He took 14 wickets in 9 matches at an economy of 10.18 and 23.29 average and currently ranks as the 3rd highest wicket-taker of the tournament. The PBKS supporters expect the 33-year-old veteran bowler to continue with his exceptional form to become the purple cap winner.

5. Alzarri Joseph (Royal Challengers Bengaluru): INR 11.50 Crores

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) grabbed West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph for an eye-grabbing deal of INR 11.50 crores. As a result, he became the 5th costliest player during the IPL 2024 auction.

However, the franchise faced a severe backlash from its fans for buying the 27-year-old West Indies cricketer at a huge price as he failed to deliver a promising performance in the tournament. In 3 matches, Alzarri only a wicket by conceding 115 runs at a poor economy of 11.90 and 115.00 average.

In the first three matches of IPL 2024, RCB gave huge responsibility of supporting the pace bowling unit to Alzarri. After facing a crushing 7-wicket defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Bengaluru, RCB decided to exclude him from the playing XI in the subsequent matches.
