Why Bangladeshi players remain ignored in the IPL?

Bangladeshi players have not had a strong presence in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its first edition over 15 years ago. The short stints of Bangladeshi players has been a cause for concern among their national team fans and commentators, as they believe India’s cricket league is a melting pot for all top talents worldwide.

However, seven (7) Bangladesh players – Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mohammad Ashraful, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, and Litton Das – have been part of the IPL up to the 2023 season. Comparing the appearances of Bangladeshi cricketers in IPL to players from other countries makes instant light work of their cricket exports to India for over a decade.

Let’s see the reasons why Bangladeshi players have been so scarce in IPL franchises since the first edition and top players who have made appearances in India’s top cricket competition so far.

Why are Bangladeshi Players Ignored in the IPL?

There is a general idea that Bangladeshi cricketers may not have the X-factor Twenty20 (T20) cricket needs. The IPL is a fast-paced tournament, and only the best of Bangladesh’s players have had their chance to shine at this premier competition.

Top Bangladesh Players who Have Been in the IPL

Mustafizur Rahman

Mustafizur Rahman is by far the best among Bangladeshi players in IPL history. He has featured for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Delhi Capitals (DC) across seven IPL seasons.

He is also Bangladesh’s first player and overseas cricketer to win the IPL emerging player award.

Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan has been a great addition to IPL cricket and has two IPL titles with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to show for it. He also played for SRH in IPL 2018 before turning down KKR’s contract at IPL 2023 due to personal reasons and international commitments.

Mohammad Ashraful

Ashraful faced an IPL experience similar to Razzak’s in 2009 as he was able to feature in just onegame for the MI side. His appearance couldn’t make any mark on MI’s performance, and they went on to lose the game by just four wickets.
